Bio
Ané Dallas-Orr (b. 1978, Cape Town) is a British-South African artist based in Margate, UK. Her practice centres upon layering and revealing, intertwining vibrant, organic forms with rich, tactile surfaces. Dallas-Orr creates intuitive, colourful paintings with biomorphic shapes and flora-like elements. These initial compositions are obscured by a thick layer of gold paint, which she meticulously sands to unveil abstract, faded forms beneath, creating a contrast between exuberant underlying colours and the muted, metallic finish of the gold.
Dallas-Orr employs acrylics, spray paint, ink, texture paste, and water washes using brushes, palette knives, and sponges. This approach allows her to create dynamic compositions with sweeping, splattering, and pouring techniques, infusing each piece with movement and spontaneity.
Her work explores themes of memory, psychoanalysis, and schema theory, delving into personal and cultural identity. Dallas-Orr's art invites viewers to engage deeply, revealing hidden aspects and evoking curiosity. Her art has been exhibited in the UK and South Africa, with commissions from private clients in Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean.
